STATEMENT OF BOARDING PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE

The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) has stated:

“A father gives his child nothing better than a good education and fine upbringing”

It is for this reason at Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah, we aim to provide a full and balanced life in the caring family atmosphere of a Co-educational school; to enable young people to develop relationships and fulfill their potentials as individuals in a secure and happy environment and thereby learn to play their full part in society as a whole.

Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah accepts a wide range of pupils of differing abilities and interests and we are happy to accept any boarder who we feel will thrive in our friendly and caring environment. The Admission team handles all registrations and admissions to the school via a personal interview with the student and his parents and a report from the previous school. Parents are required to provide complete support.

Boarding is allocated by age groups, in separate wings of our building. Senior students are selected to be tutors and to assist the pastoral care staff with simple tasks and putting various checks into place. A log is kept (Incident Record Sheets) in which minor misconduct and sanctions are recorded. Major incidents requiring formal sanctions, i.e. suspension or exclusion are recorded but can only be sanctioned by the Principal. Complaints or issues may be raised with Tutors, the supervisors, the Child Protection Officer, the independent listener or the Principal via the school’s open door policy.

Boarders are encouraged to personalise and decorate their dormitories making it homely and easier for them to adapt to their new surroundings.

There is an Independent Listener available to all students to provide counselling. It is hoped that children will feel comfortable approaching any member of staff if they have an issue or complaint that they wish to discuss. The school has a Muslim foundation, and its religious teachings play an important role in the moral and spiritual development of the students. Welfare support is provided through mentoring by the SLT, pastoral care team and the CPO.

During weekends boarders over 16 years of age, are permitted to leave to go to the local supermarket or shopping centre to shop with permission, but must return by the designated time. The SLT and pastoral care team provide a program of activities for evenings and weekends which allows boarders to have access to sports and recreation facilities within the main school campus.

Boarders are allowed to go home every 4 weeks for the weekend on Friday, but must return by 5:45pm on Sunday.

Students wishing to contact their families can do so from the Telephone room, where Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah provides a free service for students allowing them to call their loved ones from a comfortable private booth. Students must follow the phone room rota and only use the telephones in the time slots designated for their age group.

It is recommended that students hand in all valuables and money to the administration office for safe keeping. Students will have access to the student bank twice a week (Mondays and Fridays).

Perishable foods must be stored in the kitchen and consumed within 48 hours, all food that is not consumed will be removed and discarded.

All pupils are expected to attend the prayers regularly and on time.

Our aim for each boarder by the time he graduates is that he:

  • Establishes a system of contemplation, reflection and personal worship to seek to attain inner peace and harmony
  • Acquires a character that is courageous, kind, merciful, spiritual, wise and one with strong Taqwa (piety)
  • Learns to incorporate the essential practices and spirit of Islam in his daily life
  • Learns the importance of playing his part in contributing to his family and the community at large
  • Learns the value of service, duty and self-discipline
  • Learns to develop a sense of responsibility for himself and towards others
  • Appreciates the role and importance of education and character-building
  • Learns the value of friendship, selflessness and helping others
  • Learns to be responsible for his own health and hygiene
  • Appreciates respects and honours the environment.

At Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah the welfare of the students is paramount. In the Dormitories we strive to achieve a warm, homely and nurturing environment. Children and young people are part of our community, entrusted upon us by Allah.

It is therefore our duty, responsibility and our privilege to nurture and cultivate them in learning moral and social values.

  • As staff and leaders of this school, we commit ourselves to the nurturing, protection and safekeeping of all students in our care.
  • We acknowledge our responsibility to care for and support our staff and volunteers in dealing with this sensitive issue.

At Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah we recognise the importance of maintaining a robust and complete maintenance plan for the comfort and safety of all. Our maintenance officer and Pastoral care team ensure all rooms are kept to the highest standard and any issues that may arise are dealt with quickly and proficiently.

Unfortunately at present we do not have facilities for SEN students, however staff are given advice to provide extra support to students with low abilities.

  • In the dormitories, there will be students of similar age. However, they maybe of different backgrounds and from different places.
  • The dorm rooms are spacious and comfortable allowing each boarder to have his own personal space in the room
  • Boarders are provided with a locker to store all their personal belongings
  • No electrical equipment is allowed in the bedrooms. Keeping bedrooms clean and tidy is the student’s responsibility. The bedrooms are inspected daily to ensure that they are clean.

The prophet Mohammed (PBUH) has stated that:

“Cleanliness is half of Imaan (faith)”

If boarders wish to wash their clothes whilst at Darul Uloom, there are washing machines available in the laundry room. Students are permitted to wash their clothes on the day designated for their age group.

At Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah we place great emphasis on all the Sunnah, the internal aspects that are focused on by the various Tarbiyyah programmes, and the external aspects such as the uniform.

Pupils are made aware of the current school rules and the principles behind them, the desirability of self-discipline and the duty to consider others’ rights as well as their own.

  • All students should obey the school rules introduced to them by means of tutor periods assemblies, and re-enforced during the course of the school day

A practise Nurse also sees to the medical needs of the students as and when required. If a student needs to see the Doctor an appointment can be made at the Administration office. ANTI BULLYING POLICY SUMMARY AND REPORTING PROCEDURE

Along with many other teachings of the Qur’aan and the Hadith, one of the fundamental teachings is to promote unity, care and peace.

Therefore we wish to encourage an environment where independence is celebrated and individuals can flourish without fear. Every student has the right to be safe and happy in school and be protected if he is feeling vulnerable.

For this to be achieved, Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah has a zero tolerance bullying policy. However if any bullying does take place, there are some guidelines that have been set.

Firstly, at Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah, ALL staff are trained annually in Child Protection training raising awareness of signs of bullying – identifying likely situations where bullying may happen, reducing the risk of it taking place and giving the staff the knowledge of how to deal with it when it happens.

Our definition of bullying “ANY ACTION THAT RESULTS IN A MEMBER OF OUR COMMUNITY FEELING HURT, THREATENED, FRIGHTENED OR LESS PROTECTED AND SUPPORTED IS DEEMED TO BE BULLYING.

We would like you to feel comfortable to report any type of bullying that may be taking place. We are here to help and serve all our students.If any student feels he is being bullied, he should immediately inform the people of authority who will then take further action;

  • Any member of staff
  • The pastoral care team
  • The principal

Severe bullying will not be tolerated and will likely result in suspension.

ILLNESS AND ACCIDENTS

As you know, students of school age must, by law, attend school regularly. Al Jamiatul Islamiyyah wants every child to achieve the best they can and to make sure this happens children need to be in school regularly and on time. However if you feel unwell you must seek permission from a member of staff to visit Maulana Monzur in the Main Office. After an assessment is made, if you are not fit enough to continue with your lessons, only then will a phone call be made to your home asking them to come and pick you up. You must never leave the site without permission from the Main Office and signing out. If you need to bring medicine to Darul Uloom you must inform the Main Office immediately and hand it in. For the boarding students our in-house surgery is provided by Dr.S Naseef.

 LAUNDRY ARRANGEMENTS

Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has stated in a Hadeeth, “CLEANLINESS IS HALF OF DEEN.’’

At the Darul Uloom we understand the need for boarding students to wash and iron their clothes regularly. It is for this reason Darul Uloom provides a laundry service for the students where students can wash, dry and iron their clothes.

There are set guidelines, rules and a rota for the students to abide by. A few of these guidelines are as follows:

  • Ensure the room is left clean and tidy
  • Be courteous; please remove clothes promptly
  • Always clean lint screen covers before and after use of dryers
  • The tokens for the dryer and washing machine can be purchased in the tuck shop at a nominal price

 STUDENT PHONE ROOM

At Al Jamiatul Islamiyah we strive to give our students the best resources within our capacity. (Almighty Willing)

In order to provide sufficient and satisfactory facilities for students to contact parents, family and friends, we have provided a phone-room for our students.

The phone-room consists of two telephone cubicles. Students can use the phones with adequate privacy during the prescribed times.

Students are advised to take care of this facility, treat the booths with respect and be courteous towards fellow students.

Students can purchase a calling card from the tuck shop and communicate with family and friends at a very nominal rate depending on their destination.

Students can make phone calls at the following times:

MONDAY TO FRIDAY

4:30pm – 6:00pm

8:00pm – 10:00pm

SATURDAY

2:30pm – 5:00pm

8:00pm – 10:00pm

SUNDAY

10:00am – 5:00pm

TUCK SHOP

This tuck shop gives students easy access to most of their needs including snacks and refreshments as well as toiletries. One important factor that ought to be known is that all the products are being sold at an extremely low price. Any small amount of profit which is made is directly reinvested into buying new stock as well as providing larger variety of stock, travelling expenses are also covered by this small amount of profit.

The tuck shop is located in front of the library.
